Abstract: This data set includes ferrous metal mines in the United States. The data represent commodities covered by the Minerals Information Team (MIT) of the U.S. Geological Survey, and the operations are those considered active in 2003 and surveyed by the MIT. This is a replacement for the November 1998 map layer. The data is legacy and not expected to be updated. It is being provided as the best available until Mineral Resources identifies an alternative data source.
-
Purpose: This data set is intended for geographic display and analysis at the national level, and for large regional areas. The data should be displayed and analyzed at scales appropriate for 1:2,000,000-scale data. No responsibility is assumed by the U.S. Geological Survey or the National Atlas of the United States in the use of these data.

Supplemental information: Additional minerals operations information can be obtained from the U.S. Geological Survey Minerals Information web page at http://minerals.usgs.gov/minerals/.
If you are using this dataset as a shapefile, please be aware that it was converted from a Geodatabase. As a result, this shapefile may have attribution and metadata errors resulting from the conversion process. The following are known issues: null values may have been changed to 0s (zeros) or to blank values, numbers (including latitude and longitude) may have been rounded up or down, there may be issues with Unicode character strings, and time cannot be stored in a date field. Field names may have been truncated to no longer than 10 characters or completely changed, lengthy string attributes may have been truncated to 254 characters, and attribute columns may have been deleted. Shapefiles do not support coded domains and subtypes therefore the original file geodatabase attribution and metadata information for coded domains and subtypes could be incorrect or missing in the shapefile version. Please visit the following ESRI website for more information: http://pro.arcgis.com/en/pro-app/tool-reference/appendices/geoprocessing-considerations-for-Shapefile-output.htm

Description: New records were identified in aggregated dataset found at: http://mrdata.usgs.gov/mineplant.. Validated online that plants existed. Queried and exported out additional records from aggregated dataset. Appended to existing data in Excel. Appended a total of 5 new records. Modified attribute names: Renamed MINOP4X020 to MINERAL_OPERATIONS_ID, COMPANY_NA to COMPANY_NAME, STATE_LOCA to STATE, PLANT_MIN to PLANT_MINE.

Description: Automated Minerals Information System (AMIS) is an internal USGS database server that contains both proprietary and nonproprietary information. For each commodity, the Minerals Information Team (MIT) extracted from AMIS the nonproprietary information useful for this application and placed this information in a separate MicroSoft Excel spreadsheet. The MIT determined latitude and longitude for each mineral operation from at least one of the following sources: > Minerals Availability System/Minerals Industry Location System > (MAS/MILS) CD-ROM, U.S. Bureau of Mines Special Publication 12-95 > http://www.yahoo.com Searches performed on company or operation > name. > http://www.switchboard.com Searches performed on company or > operation name. > http://www.epa.gov/enviro/html/multisystem_query_java.html Searches > performed on company or operation name. > Whenever possible the locational information was checked for accuracy. The minerals operations were then placed in commodity groupings. The resulting MicroSoft Excel spreadsheet containing ferrous metal mines was converted to a text file. The text file was loaded into ArcView and a shapefile was created.
